Hang Glide at the 2008 Lake McClure Coyote Howl

May 17, 18, 2008.

Announcement

It will be Spring Flying time soon at the Mother Lode Sky Rider’s annual Coyote Howl Hang Gliding event.

As always, visiting pilots are most welcomed at the “Howl”. The popular Speed Gliding event will be held both days at 9 am. The cross country competition and spot landing contest begin around noon depending on conditions. Or participate in the event by flying for fun.

A $30 donation will allow entry to the competition, all the food and drinks you wish and provide MLSR with important fundraising.

Directions: Take State Highway 132 east towards Coulterville. Go about 1/2 mile past the turnoff to Horseshoe Bend Recreation Area and look for the Landing Zone gate to your right. If you end up in Coulterville, do not despair. Buy beer and drive back down to the west a couple miles and look for the LZ near the lake. The gate to the LZ should be accessible for the weekend.  Pilots normally meet in the LZ, load up onto a 4WD and head to the locked launch gate. Please ask others (at the LZ) if you need a ride to launch or offer a ride if you have the room.

Other Notables:

23rd Annual Coulterville Coyote Howl. Saturday, May 17, 2008

The nearby town of Coulterville is conducting the original Coyote Howl Festival during this week. This is how the HG Fly In event also became named the Coyote Howl. The event in town includes a Parade, Car Show, Dinner Dance as well as an actual Coyote Howling Competition. So if you need something besides HG to help attract a friend or family member to the Mountains, this family friendly event may do the trick. The town’s event is taking place at The County Park in Coulterville on Saturday, May 17, 2008. The Parade starts at 10 am on Main Street. At 11 am vendor booths open at the park and sell stuff until 4:30 pm. The Dinner Dance is held at the Coulterville Café from 5:30 pm until 10:00 pm and is $15 to get in.

This separate event from the Hang Gliding activities is conducted by the Mariposa County History Center in Coulterville. If you need more information or would like to volunteer to help with this non profit organization, call Gail Tyler at 878-3015. Use area code 209.  Or you can email her, nmche at inreach.com.

Hotel Jeffery. There may be rooms still available for these dates so visit their site or give them a call at 209-878-3471.

Please support the hotel if you can since the owner is donating free nights stay as prizes this year. There is a great bar adjoining the hotel also.

Camping. There will no doubt be outbreaks of pilot camping complete with TIWTIWGTD stories around the camp fire this year at the Horseshoe Bend Campgrounds.

Some love the “no lights” camping areas of Horseshoe Bend Recreation Area Campground which have the feel of being in a remote area.
